I just watched the movie "Moron 5 and the Crying Lady" yesterday with a group of blogger friends at Gateway Mall's premium Globe Platinum Cinema (Cinema 10).
The movie was top-billed with seasoned comedy actors Albert (Luis Manzano), Isaac (Billy Joe), Mozart “Mo” (DJ Durano), Michaelangelo “Mike” (Martin Escudero), Aristotle“Aris” (Marvin Agustin) - the Moron 5. Not to be missed was John "Sweet" Lapus' performance as Becky Pamintuan.
The five actors lived moronic lives mainly caused by their extremely low IQ on which the comedy movie banked on. They have equally eccentric families which has suffered from their "different" intelligence level. Making their situation worse is the revenge of the character of Becky Pamintuan.
A brief of the movie is as follows: "Careerwoman Becky Pamintuan (John Lapus) accused them of killing her father and ruin everything for them. Spending three miserable years in prison...they finally figured a way to escape. They stalked Becky and tried to understand why she's fighting so hard to have them imprisoned when it's clear as day that what happened three years ago was a nonsense frame-up... The Moron 5 will try their hardest to know and hopefully understand what's really going on although little did they know that by doing so, everything that they hold dear might be at risk." Opinion / Review
Honestly, the first part of the movie was the expected and usual Filipino boisterous comedy. However, it was the twists brought about by the vengeance of Becky Pamintuan which put direction to the plot. Director Wenn Deramas hit it here.
I would also have to commend the versatility of John Lapus in carrying a number of varied roles and handling them well. This is also the reason why I placed "The Crying Lady" ahead in the title. I found myself finally laughing at the latter half of the movie, thanks to 'Sweet'.
Casting wise, I would have to say Michaelangelo “Mike” or Martin Escudero did very well as the yougest actor among the group of Moron 5. On the other hand, DJ Durano seemed to be a little off from the group, maturity-wise. The most awkward part was when he was in his high school uniform.
In general, the movie is a no-brainer and a good way to just relax, let go of any expectation, and enjoy it with a similarly funny group of friends.
It was a day after Easter Sunday and in good timing after some serious meditation from the Holy Week. :) Catch "Moron 5 and the Crying Lady" in the movies as it started showing last April 7, 2012 and produced by VIVA Films / MVP Pictures.
